Why go recombinant
All antibodies produced by ABCD Antibodies are recombinant.
Recombinant antibodies are antibodies with known sequences that are produced in vitro. These chemically defined antibodies offer:
- controlled production
- high batch-to-batch consistency
- long-term supply (as the sequence information cannot be lost)
- the possibility of endless antibody engineering
...and don't require the use of animals for their production.
Recombinant antibodies are in line with the 3Rs principle.
The problem with traditional antibodies
Antibodies are among the most widely-used tools in biological sciences. However, they are also one of the major causes of the reproducibility crisis plaguing biomedical research.
Reproducibility requires the ability to repeat experiments with reagents identical to those used by other researchers.
In the case of traditional antibodies, it is almost impossible to guarantee the use of identical reagents.
Polyclonal antibodies are a variable mixture of several undefined antibodies produced by immunization of an animal.
Monoclonal antibodies are produced ex vivo from a single clonal cell line (called hybridoma), isolated from an immunized animal. However, hybridomas are not always a homogeneous cell population, and in one third of cases additional antibody genes might be present. Finally, when hybridomas cells producing monoclonal antibodies are lost, the corresponding monoclonal antibody is irretrievabally lost.
The only way to guarantee the identity of an antibody reagent is by knowing its aminoacid sequence.
At ABCD Antibodies, we are convinced that recombinant antibodies are superior products and that the entire scientific community would benefit from using these reagents. Better antibodies for better science.

ABCD antibodies & Animal Ethics
Recombinant antibodies, animal-free reagents in line with the 3Rs principle.
The 3Rs principle (Replace, Reduce and Refine) is a set of guidelines for the scientific community that aims at:
- replacing animal experiments when possible
- reducing the number of animals used in research
- refining protocols to ensure and enhance animal well-being.
At ABCD Antibodies, we believe that transitioning to recombinant antibodies is a practical and effective way to replace animals with a scientifically superior alternative. The transition to recombinant antibodies is strongly supported by multiple 3Rs competence centers (3RCC, NC3Rs, FC3R...) and by several animal welfare associations (LSCV, PETA...).
At ABCD Antibodies, we produce all our antibodies in vitro using Human HEK293 suspension cells that we grow in serum-free medium. This means that our products are 100% animal-free.
